Most likely a circuit breaker. A photo of it, either one you took or one you found from cyberspace would be helpful.

What should this switch do? Because it has no effect what so ever if it is on ON or OFF state. When the generator is running I switch it ON/OFF but nothing happens, output is 220v.

Have you tested the on/off of the switch while you had something plugged into the receptacle?
As said, a photo would be very helpful.

what is the exact brand and model of the gen set?
and take and post a picture of the generator panel as well.

Could it be the full amperage switch ? Why isn't it labeled ? No operators manual ?

Paint ? No wonder I didn't understand. Everybody knows you're supposed to use NEMA spec crayons.

I think that if the button is pushed in, it turns something on. If it is out, then that something is turned off.
