Uses for Honda ex5500 (stator bad) ?

1772 Views 8 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  ToolLover
So I've got an old EX5500 generator which has sadly been taken over by mice in the stator, causing the need for a rewind (one leg gets 120v, one only 80v). The cost to rewind the stator is north of $1000 and the part is "backordered" (forever) from Honda.

The thing is, its got an awesome GX360 engine in it. Electric start, liquid cooled, pressurized crankcase. Its a shame to let this thing die.

I'm wondering if there are any other generator units I can bolt on to this thing. Otherwise I'm going to make a very unneeded go cart out of this thing.

I suspect there were many gensets that used the GX360 engine, so one would think I could bolt something up (maybe not in the current housing but...).

Thoughts? Ideas? Lets not let this thing go to waste!

I'm in the same boat as you. Kinda thinking of rewinding myself, if not making a water pump or something out of it
Psst. The original post was from 2018.

If you're patient enough, you can wait for a used stator to pop-up online. But don't hold your breath... that model is getting long in the tooth and they're not really that common. But if you're handy in the shop, you can probably get an aftermarket stator designed for the GX390/188F to fit, assuming the mount points and crankshaft taper matches.

Otherwise, your only recourse is to part it out and replace it with a more modern generator, if you haven't. I'm sure the engine alone (water-cooled, no less) will fetch a good amount.
Woah, what year is it?
Honda's owner manuals go from 1982 to 2001. Not too old.
I have a service manual but it shows nothing about rewinding. I really want to try to rewind it myself but I'm having trouble locating any information on the subject

If you have the means to rewind it, you'll just have to do it the old fashioned way... count the number of turns and use copper that has exactly the same gauge as the old one.

You may find help here at a reasonable cost:
Your ES5500 is a great generator.
I would rewind it even if I had to do as OrlyP indicates.
