Questions from a new EU7000IS owner

I live in southern New Hampshire. During a polar vortex it cab reach -20F if not colder. Normally it is in the 20-30s F range at night. I plan on keeping my new gen in my insulated but unheated garage and obviously rolling it out for use. It will get below freezing in the garage during a cold period.

Should I get some sort of intake heater? I've seen some mention of that on the forums.
Is it something that can be turned off in the summer when it's warm?
Can a reasonably handy person install it on the EU 7000?

I plan on installing the magnetic drain plug and dipstick as a precaution.

Any other things I should consider?

Thanks.

I keep my EU7000 in the garage and it rarely gets under 40 deg F during the winter, but I'm in NY. Outdoor temps can get near zero but it isn't common. You definitely want a battery tender, and you should probably use 5W-30 oil if you are running in very cold temps, but I don't think you will need an intake heater unless you are experiencing poor running performance. If you were in northern Canada or Alaska, I'd be more inclined to think you might need one. Hopefully we have some Honda generator users in really cold climates who can chime in and share their experiences...

Thanks for the reply. I do have a battery tender. Best thing for the long term life of a battery.

Honda does not guarantee the unit to start at temps below 5°F even though many people still successfully use them below that.

But they do make heater kits for those that need them. See: https://cdn.powerequipment.honda.com/pe/pdf/manuals/pci54807e.pdf

👆 Just a thought on the breather heater kits...

I wonder if insulating the breather tube would help? Seems to me that there should be enough heat coming from the engine to keep that tube from freezing up if it was insulated.
Not much heat for the first 30 minutes though.

Both mine have magnetic plugs/dipstick plus battery tenders. If you use synthetic oil, you should have no problems, summer; 10w30, winter 5w30. I use only Mobil One on all my generators, one of them is a 1999 Yamaha, using Mobil One 10w30 since new and went thru almost 4 months of daily use after Hurricane Maria.
