I just bought the 3HP harbor freight pump, and was wondering what size gas motor I should get for it, and I’m assuming the engine should have more HP than the pump. Thanks!

so how are you going to connect it? belt or direct drive?
yea honda 5.5 hp rated gas engine would be nice.

It would be a belt drive. Also, do you think I could still get max cfm with a Honda GX110 rated for 3.5HP?

You need more than just a larger HP gas motor, you need a "pilot" idler valve as well and rated for 100 to 135 psi if a single stage pump is involved.

No, a 3.5 Hp GX110 would only be equivalent to a 1.5 HP electric motor. So the drive size pulley would have to be for an equivalent 1.5 electric motor (smaller). Gas and electric motors are different. A gas motor if even slightly overloaded will stall and stop. On the other hand an electric motor will just demand more amps 60,80,100 amps until the pump moves or the thermal overload/circuit breaker trips. The torque curve is different too. An electric motor provides peak torque at 0 rpm up and a gas motor's peak torque is only available at it's peak rpm and it can't create "extra" torque like the electric motor can in a pinch, and not at 0 rpm either.

I have a 5hp Briggs and Stratton engine that I can use instead. Do you need a pilot valve for a specific engine? how does the valve control the speed of the engine?

A 5 hp Briggs should work if it's not worn out. The pilot valve serves 2 purposes, the first is to stop pumping air into the tank when it reaches a safe limit (125 - 135psi single stage pumps). The tank can explode and kill people and animals if the safety valve is clogged or not working. The second reason is with an idler function that will save gas, you don't want to refill the motor every 10 minutes and waste lots of gas. Take a look at a Harbor freight gas compressor, you will see all of the parts required. This is what I would use:
