I have purchased 2 electric pressure washer in the last month both had 150 - 180 bar and when operating them the water hole adapter screwed onto the machine would split under pressure and the machine would cut out. The water feed from the tap is 500+ litres per hour and the pressure washers had a max flow of 468. Would this create back pressure and split the adapter?

use a gauge and see what is going on.

maybe just a cheap fitting..
change that out to a brass fitting.

the pressure should be 40-65 psi on the water inlet.

Yeah, use brass. I use this quick-connect with a shutoff valve on the hose side. That way, I can put the valved part on the hose, turn on the hose bibb, drag the hose over to the pressure washer, click it in and turn it the valve on, and purge the air from the pressure washer prior to starting up the engine. Shutdown is easy to do in reverse...

Your tightening that too tight and driving the stem through the end of that adaptor(happens all the time). Purchase a metal adapter as that one and you'll be fine.
