Hurricane season

Well, I broke out my generators today and exercised them hard. We usually do not have to worry about Hurricanes on the Mississippi Gulf Coast until August or September, but it pays to be ready.

Awesome. That’s a “habit” of mine every 6 weeks or so…😉

Wow. I read your thread title and my backside puckered right up  . Especially after being about ground zero at landfall for hurricane Ian last year. Fortunately for me, that went a lot better than I had hoped (not so much for a lot of folks around me). The big and small generators played a big part in that.

Same as the OP, we don't really worry about hurricane season until late August and into September in SW Florida.

I'm on the same schedule. Every 6 weeks or so, for 20 to 30 minutes. It's easy to do it regularly when I only run propane through them. The wife wondered if it was really necessary to run them that often. But after they ran flawlessly after Ian, when other neighbor's generators gave them problems, she never said another word.

It's been almost 18 years since we’ve had a bad hurricane on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That’s a record, at least in my lifetime. Unfortunately, I feel like we are overdue for one.
I know there was Nate and Zeta, but with those I didn’t lose power long enough to even have to start the generator.

We lost power for 2 days after Zeta. Other than that we've been very lucky here.

Zeta was a strange one… I think because of the way it tracked towards the northeast at an angle it was worse for the people inland than the people living directly on The Coast.
Lots of talk abt grid overloads coming to Tx this summer due to dramatic increase in population the last couple of years, hot temps in the long range forecast and more elec cars needing re-charging. Just exercised/load tested everything last week. All good..
It was a fairly hot winter this year. Great for crawfish but bad for storm season. Oddly, the prediction is a quiet season this year. Last year was supposed to be above-average but we didn't have anything that came close to us. We still have about 60 or so gallons of fuel at the ready in case we see something this season. I believe I used about 35-40 gallons in the outage in '21. My goal is to have enough fuel for at least one week, which should not be a problem given my ability to scale power and fuel use.

I've been looking at 120v interlock devices but I don't know how well a hard limit of 15 amps would work on a power leg. Seems that would be quite a limiting factor. The trick would be to be able to use the 30 amp travel trailer outlet. That would be a big help, given I don't have any 240v generators in my inventory at the moment. Two 30 amp lines for the two legs would be workable.
They are predicting a quieter Atlantic hurricane season based on the El Nino and La Nina weather patterns. Let’s hope.

When we had our house rewired, I had the electrician install a generator interlock kit with a 30 amp breaker in the new breaker box. I had an rv trailer twist lock outlet installed for the power source and bought a trailer power cable for it. I run 2 champion 2000 watt generators with a parallel kit which has a TT-30P outlet for the power cable.

This works pretty well for us as we only run a window A/C in one room. A bigger generator would be nice but availability of gas is always on my mind.

( I'm rambling, I know)

I purchased an EU7000 after Ian came through last year, and going six days without power. I had a 30 amp input box and lockout switch installed. I just ran my unit for an hour today, under low/medium loads, and gave it its' first oil change at 5 hours. The oil change was sooner than I was planning, but decided to as the unit was already warmed up. I added the magnetic oil cap when I first got the unit, and replaced the oil cap drain today with a magnetic one. Unit topped off with non-E fuel with a double dose of Stabil, back in the garage on the trickle charger.

Mine gets "exercised" monthly. I run them every month for 15 minutes and sometimes, since we get constant power outages, they get "exercised" more often.
