Looking for suggestions as to the best method to clean out and make usable a rusty metal gas tank from small equipment. Generally I pressure wash the inside with soapy water, then throw in a load of BBs with some soap and water and shake like crazy. Also tried CLR, Calcium Lime Rust remover but it did not work so well. I am not interested on doing the lining job with Kreme.

Try using the soapy water and sand instead of bbs then strap it to the wheel of your lawn tractor and go for several laps around the yard then empty and rinse well with gas and then line it

A lot of the time if we have rusted old metal fuel tank
I fill it with Parts wash and a whole heap of nuts and shake the **** out of it
Most of the time it comes up looking really good

I have used Evaporust on rust with good success. Non-toxic, not hazardous, and you can leave it in there, turning it from side to side every so often. Their website shows a gas tank treated.
