Hi all, new here looking for advice.

I have a Honda EX5D project genset that I am attempting to revive. The owner (my father) states it was working fine and then ceased power production suddenly. I am not aware of any overloading that may have occurred, he's pretty easy on equipment and does not have a heavy application requirement.

He trusted a not necessarily knowledgeable "friend" to look into it and he was unsuccessful. I found out later speaking with the gentleman that he attempted to "flash" the unit. All well and good except for the 120v flasho_O. I don't think this did the power head and favours. He claims it worked and the unit generated power but on shutdown and restart, reverted back to no production.

All that to say I'm having a look at it with shop manual documentation. I'm going to start the suggested trouble shooting steps and have checked resistance/continuity on the stator, slip rings etc. and all seems per spec. I did note however, what looks to be discolouration on the stator winding in one area a bit difficult to get a good look. I will attempt to obtain and post a photo soon.

Anyone on this forum familiar with this unit? It's real nice super quiet diesel 5kW and I'd hate to see it meet its demise. I would consider replacing/rewinding the stator or the entire power head if I could find a suitable donor (not necessarily OEM). Surely there's a generator out there that will bolt up with little to no mods?

Hopefully someone can chime in.

thanks,

Not exactly sure what I did but the old girl came around. I applied 12v to the brushes, that didn’t do anything. Checked all the windings and they seemed ok. I cleaned up the slip rings as they were black and that must have been it. I started it to check stuff again and had a green pilot light.
Seems to be holding so I’ll leave it at that.
Cheers
