We have a 3hp diaphragm pump with 3in hoses.
We are attempting to use this to pump mud and debries from the button of our lake around our dock.
There is a strainer on the end of the suction hose. The pump will pimp water and we see it pull in leafs but we have yet to see it pump any mud.

The strainer has holes around the sides but not the bottom.

Will this work better if we added holes to the bottom or just completely removed the strainer?

what is the make and model of the pump?
well for water only the strainer works...
but for trash and silt etc.
it works best if you have an agitator in a box area to control the trash.
the screen should have openings just under the size the pump can handle for trash as it protects the inlet from plugging up
hard settled mud needs to be in a simi fluid state to pump out right...

we have used a china fire nozzle on a long pvc pipe to hydrolic move the mud san rocks etc to get it in the fluid state to be pumped.

also look in to a suction jet system like they use on the gold dredge systems.

the mud can be moved via large hose to a de water pond or settling pond.
we use the 2 inch pacer pumps from tractor supply with those jet logs
