Porter Cable model #PXCM601 60 Gallon single stage with 3 hp motor..A few weeks ago. My Unit stops working..the electric motor sparked, smoked & died. Got a new one from Home Depot & got it wired up to 220 volts. it started working ok right away & built up pressure real good. Then I turn it off. Come back a few days later to use it. Turn it on to top off air in tank. It starts up, runs for a few seconds, bogs down & stops. So I have changed these parts = Electric motor, pressure switch & check valve. Same problem...Now I have to push reset button on motor & turn it on to make it run, but it still only goes for a few seconds & stops on it's own. The only way to make it run & build up good pressure & fill the tank is to completely drain all of the air out & start it up again..kinda odd...kinda like some kinda pressure issue is stopping...I don't know..about ready to sell it as is & buy a new one..any advice to solving this mystery is welcome...Thanks Guys...oh, i have also recently changed the oil in it too...

TooFast47,

Sounds like there is a heavy load of some kind like a bad check valve or head read valve problem. How may amps are drawn at 0 psi? how many amps at 80psi? a cheap clamp on ammeter can tell you a lot. what voltage under load? 230, 220, 210?

when it cuts off, it still turns with a compression feel, kinda snug & it makes a farting noise too...my uncle told me something about read valves going bad before. I took bolts out of the compressor pump a while back but it was like stuck on tight & I didn't wanna break it so I replaced bolts good & tight..maybe if I just remove pump & tear into it on my workbench & see what's going on..huh

Lately, I haven't had time to mess with the compressor..Today, the pressure was down to around 40 PSI. I pushed the Reset Button on the motor & turn it on..Then it got happy & built up pressure like it was supposed to do & it actually turned off by itself around 145 PSI...So it gets real low on air in the tank & runs...but if it's a little lower, like on 100 PSI & I turn it back on to top it off, it only runs for a few seconds & stops. Is there something I can adjust for the pressure to make it do right ? huh...

take a look at you tube
it is best to look up the adjustments by the exact pressure switch you have.
there are two adjustments
top pressure and off set or differential (pressure swing).

i like top pressure at 10-30 psi below the pump rating.
and if you have any compressor that is 175psi rated or above
i like to kick in the compressor at 150 psi on a 80 gallon unit or larger.

a larger system tank with a check valve is always a good plan

"but if it's a little lower, like on 100 PSI "
that's starting to sound like the pilot valve isn't unloading the cylinder head and possibly the check valve is leaking back into the cylinder. seems like it's not happy trying to start up against existing pressure
