hyundai dhy12500se Voltage Issues

Hi, I have a hyundai dhy12500se generator powering 3 of 1000w metal halide floodlights. All switches on ok starting at about 20amps and reducing to about 12amps after a minute, during this time i noticed the voltage drop to 225v from the standard pre set 230v now directly after this for the next 30 seconds the voltage starts to increase slowly all the way to 250v where the high voltage alarm is set and trips the generator.

Any ideas as to why its doing this?

I thought it was maybe a generator issue but i connected 3 500w LED floodlights and these run with no issues.

Those lamps have harmonic issues an it's effecting your excitation system. I doubt your VR is a true RMS regulator. A none RMS reg cares less about the peak numbers it's only looking at the bottom numbers an with the amount of distortion on the wave form Mh lights cause, what your seeing is normal. You will find if you add more load or enough unity power factor load your voltage will return to normal settings. Even 252Vac is still a legal voltage.

Once you know how a device, system, ect operates, finding the root cause in the event chain is easy. Until then, you will always be chasing/repairing the effects. Learning is a life time event, if you want to outsmart, whatever item you want to repair.

Hi KRE thanks for the response, Ok that kind of makes sense as i tested it on one light and it was a lot worse soon as i added the other lights on it worked better but still the same fault.

So the trip setting at 250Vac is its max setting but i can turn off the setting. Before that i could test the real voltage using a RMS meter and see what it is doing for sure or even add likes of a heater in the circuit to see if that helps?

I think I have it sorted. Power factor seems to have been a culprit but also the capacitors were causing a fault. So all is ok for now. Real test will be tonight when they are on for 2-3 hours
